From a Trainer Who Has Been There — Lost Weight (Commercial Appeal)
The Commercial Appeal newspaper recently ran a feature about my personal weight loss journey, and I want to share that story here because I think it matters. When people walk into Dexter Tenison Fitness for the first time, they see a trainer in good shape and assume I have always been this way. That could not be further from the truth.
Where I Started
I grew up in a small town in Tennessee where food was love, portions were massive, and nobody talked about nutrition. Fried everything, sweet tea by the gallon, and seconds were expected. By the time I was a young adult, I was carrying way more weight than I should have been, and I did not have anyone in my life showing me a different path.
The Turning Point
My life changed when I had the opportunity to live in China. Being in a completely different culture forced me to rethink everything about food and movement. I saw people who were active daily, who ate reasonable portions, and who treated their bodies with respect. Something clicked in me over there. I started exercising consistently, I learned about proper nutrition, and the weight started coming off. It was not overnight — it was months and years of building new habits.
The Transformation
When I came back to the States, I was a different person. Not just physically, but mentally. I had proven to myself that change was possible, that I was not stuck being overweight forever. That transformation lit a fire in me. I knew I wanted to help other people experience what I had experienced — the confidence, the energy, the feeling of finally being in control of your own body.
Why It Matters for My Clients
This is exactly why I became a personal trainer in Memphis and started Dexter Tenison Fitness. I am not a trainer who read about weight loss in a textbook. I lived it. I know what it feels like to look in the mirror and not recognize yourself. I know the frustration of failed diets and the shame that comes with being out of shape. And I know what it takes to climb out of that hole because I did it myself.
When a client tells me they feel hopeless, I do not just give them a motivational speech. I tell them my story. I show them that the trainer standing in front of them used to be right where they are. If I can do it, they can do it.
Thank You, Commercial Appeal
I am grateful to the Commercial Appeal for sharing my story with Memphis. If even one person reads it and decides to take that first step toward getting healthy, then it was worth every word. The hardest part of any fitness journey is believing you can actually change. I am living proof that you can. And at Dexter Tenison Fitness, I will be right there with you every step of the way.
