The story behind Dexter Tenison Fitness — why we started, what drives us, and why helping people transform is more than just a job.

People ask me all the time: “Why personal training? Why not something easier?”

Fair question. The hours are early. The work is physically demanding. And convincing someone to do burpees at 6 AM isn’t exactly a recipe for popularity. But at Dexter Tenison Fitness, we wouldn’t trade this work for anything.

Here’s why.

It Started With a Transformation

Like a lot of trainers, my journey into fitness started with my own transformation. I know what it feels like to be uncomfortable in your own skin. I know the frustration of not knowing what to do or who to trust. And I know the life-changing moment when it finally clicks.

That experience created a fire in me that hasn’t gone out.

The Moment That Hooked Me

The first time a client broke down crying because they fit into jeans they hadn’t worn in five years — that was it. I was hooked. Not on the training. On the transformation.

Watching someone discover what they’re capable of is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever experienced. The physical changes are visible, but the real transformation happens on the inside: confidence, energy, self-belief.

What Drives Dexter Tenison Fitness

We’re not in this to build a fitness empire. We’re in this because:

  • Every person deserves to feel strong. Regardless of where they’re starting from.
  • The fitness industry fails people. Too many gimmicks, too little honesty. We want to be different.
  • Memphis needs better options. Not another big-box gym where you’re a number. Real coaching, real accountability, real results.
  • This work matters. We’re not selling products. We’re changing lives.

More Than a Gym

At Dexter Tenison Fitness, we build relationships. We know our clients’ names, their families, their struggles, and their victories. When you train with us, you’re not a customer — you’re part of a community.

That’s why we do what we do. Not for the money. Not for the Instagram followers. For the look on someone’s face when they realize they’re stronger than they ever imagined.

That never gets old.
